Life Lessons from Reel Big Fish

19 Apr

Today’s lessons are being taken from the wisest of all ska bands.

  • Starting a band isn’t as easy as you thought it was.
  • Beer is good.
  • There’s always an occasion for Hawaiian shirts.
  • People lie to you. I know it can hurt, but don’t take it personally. There may be other factors in the liars’ lives that led them to lie to you. For example, you think you’re never gonna hear someone complain again and then BAM! They release another album or six. [Not including live albums.]
  • Nothing can get you another girlfriend quite like writing a song about how you want another girlfriend. [Especially if it’s directed at a friend with a girlfriend that you want.]
  • On occasion, things suck. But do you know what to do with all that anger, pain and SHEER EMOTION? Chanel it into something creative: something positive. Don’t waste your time wallowing in self-pity being all “WOE IS ME”. Go out and do something good.
  • Sideburns go with everything.
  • Country songs always get the crowd going.
  • Getting jealous of your friends from time to time is normal, the only thing you can do in those situations is laugh. Heartily.
  • Somewhere in this big wide world, there will always be someone who hates you. And who knows, you may be lucky and have a whole bunch of people hate you. And do you know what to do if this ever happens? Not give a shit. No really, as Kevin G put it “don’t let the haters stop you from doing your thing” or ‘thang’. Whatever. The point is: people hate people. Sometimes for no good reason, sometimes for the smallest of reasons, sometimes for legit reasons. And all there is to do is ignore these people and get on with life.
  • There may come a time in your life when you’re kissing someone but they wish that they were kissing someone else. Shit happens.
  • If bandmates/friends/that guy you know sing over you when you’re talking to them/giving them instructions, they’re not going to hear you.
  • Ska covers are the best covers.
  • Fuck everything.shirts0265_n
