80s playlist

22 Feb

What do you think of when someone says ‘the 80s’ to you? Spandex? Shoulder pads? Neon everything? Some of the best movies ever made? Yeah, me too. Like every decade, it’s instantly recognisable through its music, which is [surprisingly] what I want to focus on today.

From what I’ve been told there was lots of hair metal, cheesy pop, hip hop, good pop and power ballads. Unfortunately I wasn’t able to witness any of this first hand but what I’ve heard from CDs and seen on the TV and YouTube have been all kinds of glorious. Particularly this:

I’m getting broody just looking at these fine specimens of manhood.

It’s strange to look back and think that this was considered fashionable. But as the saying goes, we learn from our mistakes and hey, who knows, maybe if there was a different fashion in the 80’s we’d be wearing what they wore today! Ooooh, that would be a very strange and colourful parallel universe indeed. I couldn’t wear leather trousers. Personally, I would rock the fuck out the Madonna/Cyndi Lauper look.

So, getting back on topic: this playlist is in two parts, two sides if you will, just like in the old days. Side 1 is the very best in epic, hair-raising rock, while side 2 is the very best in pure, unashamed cheese. As always, listen and enjoy.
