Not Too Gay To Function

21 Sep

I’m going to talk about gays in this article. Yes this is a bit different, offensive, even strange to put in the health section but being gay is sometimes described in the discriminative way of describing someone’s life choices as a ‘mental illness’.

Recently I have filled in quite a few job application forms and a few have asked me for my sexual orientation, I was shocked. I thought that this was probably illegal but it was strange that such a big well-known company was getting away with it. After discussing it with some people, I realised that it was a legal requirement that companies hire so many homosexuals, people of colour and people who suffer from mental disorders. But why should it matter whether you like men or women and how will that affect how you perform at your job? Yes it is all well and good not being discriminative and hiring more diverse groups of people but if the company is so undiscriminating then why does it need to ask? Just hire people for the job, regardless of these things. And if it is a legal requirement then don’t ask for it on the application form. Firstly it may scare people thinking of coming to your workplace and that is the opposite of the discrimination that the government is trying to oppose. If anything, do a confidential survey with the staff at the workplace, just to check that you are offering the jobs to a variety of people. Don’t hire them on the pretence that you need that token gay.

Anyway, to end my rant, it should not matter if a group of black people are in a workplace and one white person comes along. It should be irrelevant and these discriminative companies should be shut down.

In summary, a person loving a man or a woman or who white, etc. can work just as well as any Tom, Dick or Harry that loves a woman or a man or who is black etc. Judge someone on whether they are adequate for the job requirements; everything else should not even be a factor.
