Unembarassing Facts of UTIs

7 Sep

Urine infections. Cringe? That’s alright, I did too, even when just thinking about writing this. Living with one for nearly a year and listening to my friends complain when I continually moaned to them about it however taught me to never be ashamed of it. Certainly growing up and having more and more friends who are sexually active has helped me to understand that it is not as abnormal as I first thought. Many females (who are the most prone to them) suffer and this occurs most often after sex when bacteria has a chance to enter. Icky, yes but certainly not uncommon.

If you look at a previous article about Embarrassing Bodies, I discuss what it is like admitting you have a problem and seeing a doctor about it etc. Problems in this area seem to be one of the ones that people will say ‘I will sort it myself’ or  ‘it will just go away by itself’. It seems that some people would rather go through the uncomfortable and sometimes painful problems rather than just go to the doctor and get the necessary medication.

The symptoms may consist of a burning sensation when you pee, needing to pee but not being able to, a severely uncomfortable feeling after you have peed or tried to pee, the amount of pee whether it is more or less.

The causes for older females are pretty self-explanatory. As stated by the American Pregnancy Association, “sex is a very common cause of urinary tract infections in women. From what I understand it’s not so much the frequency but the act in itself. The fact that you have sex often only increases your chances. The reason sex can cause infections is due to the fact that during penetration you’re allowing bacteria to enter”. It’s not just sex that causes them however, waiting too long to pee, certain contraceptives such as diaphragms and spermicides, the skin cleansers etc. you use and many more.

Ways of keeping them away include peeing after sex, drinking lots of water (6-8 glasses a day), avoiding sugars, alcohol and caffeine and avoid wearing tight fitting pants, go for cotton ones. Also be careful of beauty treatments, sprays etc. you put down there, those can be lethal to bringing on problems.

They are not too dangerous, although there is some speculation over whether recurring UTI’s can cause infertility. The best idea is to go straight to your doctor as soon as you think you may have one and a sample there will determine what is wrong. It’s probably nothing to worry about, a simple course of antibiotics and voila, all gone. If they keep coming back then don’t panic, just go and speak to your doctor and tell them about the problem.
